All of that empty black space reminds me of the villiams' hide-outs from the old Batman TV series.

The Kodan armada bridge. Not quite as sparse as the Romulan bridge from the old Star Trek series, but pretty close.
These guys were supposed to be "plugged into" the set like computer components. Yeah... that really came across well.
